Solid brick, stone and many non-traditional homes cannot be cavity filled. External wall insulation (EWI) wraps the building in a layer of insulation board finished with render or brick-effect slips. Done well, it transforms comfort and running costs and gives a tired exterior a fresh finish. Done badly, it traps moisture and creates cold bridges at every window, eave and pipe.

Eco Home Co surveys the property first and produces a specification that an installer can price against, so the detailing is right before any boards go on the wall.

What the survey covers

• Wall construction, condition and any existing damp or structural movement
• Roof overhangs, eaves, verges, window reveals, cills, soil pipes, meters and other details that need extending or moving
• Ground-level detailing, damp-proof course and drainage
• Ventilation strategy once the building is made more airtight
• Planning considerations, conservation areas and listed status
• Insulation thickness and system type to achieve the target U-value
