Is your loft doing its job?

Around a quarter of the heat in an uninsulated home escapes through the roof. Even homes that were insulated years ago are often well below the 270mm of mineral wool that current guidance recommends, and insulation that has been compressed, disturbed or stored under boarding loses much of its benefit.

A loft insulation survey from Eco Home Co gives you a clear, independent picture of what is actually up there and what should be done about it, before anybody sells you anything.

What the survey covers

• Measured depth and type of existing insulation, and how evenly it is laid
• Condition checks for damp, compression, slumping and pest damage
• Ventilation at the eaves and ridge, so that adding insulation does not cause condensation
• Loft hatch, pipework, water tanks and electrical cables that need protecting or insulating
• Boarded areas, storage and whether raised loft legs are needed
• Suitability for the alternative of a warm-roof or room-in-roof insulation if you use the loft space

What you receive

A written report with photographs, a recommended specification (depth, material and any preparation works such as ventilation or tank jacketing) and an indication of the likely saving on your heating bills. You can hand the report to any installer and get like-for-like quotes.

Loft insulation is one of the simplest and cheapest improvements a home can have, and it is included in most retrofit assessments as a first step.
